"order and spontaneity"
About the Art___________________
Anyone involved in the study or observation Nature has known about the "order from chaos" theory of Nature's system. This has been measured mathematically and resulted in the Sacred geometry and Golden means we know through Pythagoras' studies of math, music, art and language. We also know that any sequence taken out to its fullest completion will result in a complete geometric design. These are usually exact and equal segments of order becoming more and more complex and causing repetitive, involved designs which are extremely beautiful and show how the natural designs of Nature are mathematically the same in the smallest quantum structure to the largest galaxy in the universe.
What the Chinese knew and celebrated was the "order" OF Chaos found in any natural scene or event such as the inverted space between the branches of a tree; the shapes and recognizable designs found in liquid, moving clouds; the gestalt sound of noise and the symmetry of many various shapes combined on a given surface. The Chinese called this effect, "Li" and it is what I have striven for in my art.
Even in my realist subjects I always tried to see and express the uniformity and beauty, the abstract designs inherent in nature scenes and in my abstract pen and inks, have tried to express the same. The difference is in the control. In my ball point pieces here is none, or hardly any. They are produced by concentrating on the tip of the pen and observing the strokes and interesting shapes which appear automatically. I have found it amazing how these drawings almost always produce patterns and beauty and sometimes recognizable shapes and structures completely from randomness.
I have tried many different inks and stylus' and found that only ball point pens can handle the strokes in their roughness and flow. All other pens would break under speed or muddy under the amount of ink layered over each other. These drawings are best observed until a recognizable shape appears to you. I find that they are representative symbols of those pertaining to your life. for instance one man picked a piece because of a "dog" shape that appeared t him, and once he pointed it out it was vwery apparent to any observer. it turns out that the man's dog, whom had been with him for many years, had died recently. He then started seeing other designs and symbols, much like decoding a dream or an associative writing.
I hope the art is as enjoyable as staring at clouds is to most of us. I like to put on classical or New Age music and watch them. Thank you.
